The New Zealand Lottery is a national lottery controlled by the government through an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand (formerly the New Zealand Lottery Commission). The profits from the lotteries are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board directly to charities and community organizations. Lotto New Zealand has four lottery games: the Lotto, Keno, Instant Kiwi and Bullseye.
Laos officials are accused of rigging the national lottery in order to avoid large pay-outs, sources in the communist country tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings of the national lottery—which take place three times each week—often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky, according to the sources. The winners are often not notified in time to cash their checks, they add.
A private business interest with connections to the ruling elite is behind the national lottery, the sources say. The owners of the company reportedly pay the government an annual concession fee but do not disclose it to the public.
