In Laos, the national lottery is run by private business interests with close ties to the ruling elite. A state official who spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity said that the companies responsible for the national lottery include members of the families of former Prime Minister Thongsing and ex-president Khamtay Siphandone. The official added that he hopes the national government will resume control of the lottery, as the private business interests cannot be trusted to conduct it honestly.
