Lottery is a form of gambling in which a number is drawn to determine the winner of a prize. Depending on the jurisdiction, lottery games may or may not be legal, and prizes may be distributed directly to winners or through third parties. In the United States, lotteries are controlled by state and federal governments. In Canada, they are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is composed of five regional lotteries owned by their respective provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon). In addition to these national lotteries, some jurisdictions have local or municipal lotteries.

During the late 15th century, Europeans began to introduce lotteries to their cultures. While most of the early lotteries were religious in nature, many were secular and included a variety of games. A common theme among these was that participants had to match a specific set of numbers or symbols in order to win. Other games, such as the Italian game chibeta, which featured a combination of numbers and letters, were also popular.

In the modern world, there are now a large number of different types of lotteries. Some are government-run, while others are privately operated. Regardless of their origin, all lotteries share certain characteristics: they offer a chance to win a prize, they require the purchase of a ticket and the chance to match a winning combination of numbers or symbols, and they have a fixed price per ticket.

There are a number of ways to play the lottery, including scratch cards, instant tickets and keno. Several jurisdictions have laws against lottery participation, while other countries regulate the industry and limit its growth. In the United States, for example, the National Lottery is a government-controlled and nationally-recognized company that operates the second largest multi-jurisdictional lottery in the world. The company also has a number of online games.

The government of Liechtenstein maintains a lottery in cooperation with the International Lottery Foundation (ILLF). The foundation pioneered Internet lottery games, launching the first web-based lottery, PLUS Lotto, in 1995 and processing the first-ever online lottery transaction. The foundation supports charitable projects domestically and internationally.

Laos has a lottery in which players can pick the number of a buffalo, which is associated with good luck. In the past, access to the buffalo number was often cut off during lottery drawing days, and it was restored only 10 minutes before the drawing was scheduled to take place, a source told RFA’s Lao Service. The government has also taken steps to combat informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased via short messaging services.

In New Zealand, lotteries are controlled by the government through an autonomous crown entity known as Lotto New Zealand. Lottery profits are distributed by the Lottery Grants Board to charities and community organisations. These include Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and the New Zealand Film Commission.
