The name you register when purchasing your ticket(s) will be placed in the lottery spinner before the event begins and if your name is called during the Lottery, stand up to claim your artwork by telling the auctioneer your Lottery number. If you cannot attend the event, please contact the gallery to set up a proxy in advance with our staff members.
Lottery in Laos has long been a popular pastime, even though the communist country has no laws to regulate it. But authorities are accused of rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs. Drawings in the country’s national lottery, held three times each week, often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to win. For example, the winning number in a recent drawing—509—appeared only as 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, a source in Vientiane told RFA’s Lao service. In addition, the source said that business interests linked to the lottery’s concession are staffed by people with connections to the ruling elite. These business interests, the source added, pay the government an annual fee to manage the lottery’s work but are not inspected by the authorities.
