The country’s national lottery is widely considered a scam with the government rigging the results to avoid having to pay out large sums, sources in the communist nation tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings of the national lottery, which take place three times a week, often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets. In a recent drawing the lucky cat number 509 mysteriously disappeared from purchased tickets, raising suspicions of shenanigans.
A lottery salesman who spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity said the officials behind the national lottery have links to the ruling elite and manipulate the results to keep themselves rich. He said the business interests that run the lottery know what numbers people buy, and that allows them to manipulate the results by blocking certain numbers or by not selling them. He added that the national lottery should be managed by the state.
