Lottery games are gambling games that offer a chance to win prizes by matching numbers drawn from a draw. They can be played on television, the internet or in casinos. Some are state-regulated, while others are not. While most people play for fun, some take the game seriously and try to make a living from it. The lottery industry is a large and growing business, with an estimated worldwide market worth more than US$200 billion.

In addition to traditional national lotteries, many countries have local lotteries that operate in their own jurisdiction. These can be regional, municipal or even privately operated. These lottery games are usually regulated by state and provincial laws, with each having its own set of rules and prizes. In the United States, local lotteries have grown in popularity since the introduction of instant games and video lottery terminals (VLT). VLTs are similar to slot machines but do not require a human operator.

The New Zealand national lottery is an autonomous Crown entity called Lotto New Zealand, which replaced the nation’s original two lotteries in 1987. Lottery profits are distributed to the public through a series of statutory bodies, including Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and the New Zealand Film Commission. The profits are also used to fund community projects.

New Zealand has a long history of legalised gambling. The country is a popular tourist destination and offers several gaming options, including casino resorts, hotels, restaurants, and bars. In 2011, the government approved a bill that would allow online sports betting and a lottery-style game. The new law went into effect in April 2012.

In Vietnam, the state-run lottery is a popular way for citizens to win big money. The total prize pool for the Mega 6/45 lottery game reached 8.800 billion dong ($376 million) in the first half of this year. The proceeds are added to the treasury, and are used to fund social and health initiatives across the country.

The centralized management of Vietnamese lotteries is provided by the Vietnam Lottery Company, an agency owned by the Ministry of Finance that issues point-of-sale licenses to authorized lottery retailers. The company provides a variety of lottery games, including traditional ones and daily Keno, and offers an instant online ticket service.

Thousands of people throughout the country hawk lottery tickets to earn a living. In the heart of the capital, Ho Chi Minh City, 4,000-6,000 people saturate the streets to sell tickets. Traditionally, these workers are women, elderly people and those with physical disabilities, but competition is rising from young people axed from professional jobs by the economic slump.

A lottery seller named Huong starts her day at 5 am with a bowl of rice and vegetable soup before hitting the streets. On good days she can sell 250 tickets, making a daily profit of about 11 US-dollars. Her husband Manh accompanies her on their 16-hour shift, which can be especially hectic when the lottery results are announced between 8 pm and 9 pm.
