How to Play the Lottery Online in Vietnam, Canada, and the United States

Lotteries are organized games where players win prizes based on a drawing of numbers. Prizes can range from cash to goods to services. They are a popular form of gambling, and are found throughout the world. Some countries have state-sponsored lotteries while others have private ones. Many states have their own rules governing the operation of these games, including whether they are legal and how much the winnings can be. In the United States, large portions of many state lotteries are used to fund public education systems.

In the US, lottery winners are required to pay taxes on their winnings. However, the amount of tax depends on the state and the type of game. For example, Colorado and Massachusetts require a higher percentage of the winnings to be paid in taxes than other states. Canada has four nationwide lotteries, operated by provincial/territorial governments and the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. These include Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. These are a combination of instant scratch-off tickets and regular draw games.

Laos has a state-run lottery with a number of private business interests having a stake in the system, RFA sources report. These businesses have connections to national leaders. The winning numbers in the national lottery often appear to be rigged or manipulated. For example, the number 509 in October’s lottery drawing appeared only as a five on purchased tickets, and then suddenly disappeared shortly before the drawing, one source said.

The private business interests have a say in the way the national lottery is run, and this makes the drawings untrustworthy, an official told RFA’s Lao Service. He added that the business interests should be removed from control of the lottery and that the government should resume responsibility for it.

For many Vietnamese people, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. Some even choose this job over begging, which is socially despised. In addition to the monetary profits, sellers earn valuable experience that will help them in their future careers. The story of Huong, a single mother from Saigon, illustrates the struggle that lottery sellers face in Vietnam. On good days, she sells 250 tickets a day, but on bad days she only manages 180. Despite the difficulties, she and her husband work 16 hours a day in order to make money. In the end, it is all worth it for them because they have no other choice.
