The Thai Lottery (Thai: slaakkinaebng, RTGS: salak kin baeng) is one of only two forms of legal gambling in the Land of Smiles and is drawn twice per month on the first and sixteenth. With more than 19 million players, or a quarter of the country’s population, it is an enormously popular game, but it’s also one that can be difficult for street vendors to make a profit from, as they must pay 0.5% stamp duty on government lottery winnings and 1% on charitable lottery winnings to their local tax office.

There are two types of Thai lottery tickets, TGL and TCL, sold in ticket-pairs, with a set of anti-counterfeiting features printed on them. The draw itself is conducted by a “Draw Chairman,” who checks the equipment, number of balls, and search for anomalies before randomly selecting the first-prize winner’s six-digit numbers. The remaining balls are then used to initialize the machines for the lesser prizes, which include a third prize of B40,000, fourth prize of B10,000, and fifth prize of B20,000. The winner of each prize is then announced, along with the +-1 special prize numbers.

While some people choose their lucky numbers by visiting a ghostly shrine or reading messages from the cosmos, the vast majority simply rely on their ability to calculate short odds and choose their numbers accordingly. Whatever the outcome, the lottery experience, with its promise of sudden wealth, unites the community and fosters hope, optimism, and a sense of shared destiny. Even if the dream of winning is never realized, the prospect alone can shift consumer behavior, as winners spend their windfalls.
