A lottery salesperson in Laos is forced to accept being marginalized by her market and her customers. Rather than fight for her rights she has adapted to her situation and is content with her role as an employee of the state-run lottery enterprise.

Lottery winners’ names are not made public without their written consent. This is a requirement to protect the privacy of those who are not willing or able to share their information. Winners must provide proof of their identity before they can receive their prize money.

The government should resume control of the national lottery and not allow private business interests to manipulate drawing results, sources in the communist country tell RFA. Currently, the national lottery draws three times each week, but the winning numbers often vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky. In one case on Oct. 14, the number 509 appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, but then reappeared later in the draw as 134, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.
