His note to his family stated that he had sold his motorcycle in the hope of improving his life, and that if the lottery did not pay off, he had no other options.
While the odds of winning a lottery are low, many people still play it to experience the entertainment value and other non-monetary benefits that it provides. The utility gained from the entertainment and other benefits may well outweigh the negatives of a monetary loss, making the purchase of a lottery ticket a rational choice for the individual in question.
