This has made lottery games more accessible to a wider audience and increased the likelihood of winning. However, a growing number of people have concerns about the security of lottery websites. These concerns are justified, as there have been numerous cases of fraudulent activity in the past.

Various forms of lottery are played in different countries, from the smallest local lotteries to the biggest national games. Vilasack Phommaluck, a Finance Ministry official who serves on the committee that oversees the lottery, told RFA that changes had already been made to address some of the complaints about the lottery’s legitimacy. He said that reducing the number of drawings from three times a week to once a week could help to restore faith in the game, as well as making it easier to see how the numbers are chosen.

Another concern voiced by some is that private business interests are manipulating the results of the national lottery to their advantage. A caller to RFA’s Lao Service who spoke on condition of anonymity told us that the companies responsible for running the lottery are owned by members of the country’s ruling elite and their family members. He added that the businesses pay the state a concession fee but are not required to disclose how much money they take in. Consequently, there is little public oversight of their operations. The caller said he hopes the state would resume control of the national lottery so that it is managed transparently.
