Private business interests run the national lottery in the communist nation of Laos, and drawing results often are rigged, according to sources in the country. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number 509 appeared only as a 5 on tickets purchased throughout the day of the drawing, RFA’s Lao Service learned from a source who spoke on condition of anonymity. “The government should take back control of the lottery because private business interests can’t be trusted,” the source added. “People are buying tickets in hopes of winning big money, but they won’t get it.” Ounkeo Souksavanh contributed to this report.
