A woman sells tickets for the national lottery in a market in the capital, Vientiane. Her stall is the only one selling tickets for the drawing, which is scheduled to take place later this month. She says she doesn’t get much business as people are more interested in online lotteries.

But she doesn’t mind. She has no plans to quit her job because she can use the money to support her family and take trips. “I want to go to South Korea, Vietnam, Japan,” she said. “I have a list of places.”

Lao authorities are aware of the problem and are trying to crack down on illegal online lotteries, Finance Minister Bounchom Ubonpaseuth told the National Assembly. He said foreign lotteries are sold unlawfully in Laos up to four times a day even though the country has its own legal lottery. Bounchom called for investment in a system that can trace those involved in illegal online lotteries. The ministry has also asked the relevant sector to regulate online lottery sales, he said.
