Sources in the Communist country of Laos say officials are rigging the national lottery by manipulating drawings to avoid large pay-outs. Drawings frequently show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or that are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be picked. For example, the number 09 appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout Oct. 14 of this year, a resident of the capital Vientiane told RFA’s Lao Service.
Those involved in the national lottery include business interests with connections to Laos’ ruling elite, the source said. “Hopefully, the government will regain control of the national lottery so that the drawing results can be 100 percent trusted,” he added.
