Lao deputy finance minister and lottery supervisor Sila Viengkeo said that the directive would be implemented soon, but did not say when. He added that the ministry will not tolerate lottery fraud, but he did not elaborate on what measures it would take to protect the public.
Although gambling is illegal in Laos, there are Special Economic Zones where it is allowed to operate. These zones are usually leased out to foreign investors to boost trade. In addition to these, there are numerous offshore casinos that accept players from Laos without risking their lives and money. This is because these sites are not registered with the Laos government.
