Drawings regularly show numbers that suddenly vanish from purchased tickets, or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. Moreover, the companies responsible for running the state lottery are often owned by individuals with close ties to the ruling elite, RFA’s Lao Service found. On Oct. 14 this year, the number 509 mysteriously disappeared from ticket purchases throughout the day of the drawing before appearing as a winner just an hour before the draw. This is just one example of a trend that has been occurring for years.
