This talk explores the political, economic and moral history of lotteries in Laos since 1975, and the mechanics of the lottery system itself. Dr Charles (Chip) Zuckerman is a linguistic anthropologist who studies Laos. His doctoral research in Luang Prabang explored gender and the moral and communicative dimensions of gambling. His post-doctoral research focuses on linguistic and cultural diversity and convergence among indigenous peoples in the Nakai-Nam Theun Protected Area. His work is rooted in fieldwork, drawing on both ethnographic and historical data. He has published a range of articles and is the author of the book “Gambling in Laos: Culture, Gender and the State”.
