Private lotteries are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Over 30 countries have legalized lotteries, while many more allow their operation. Individual lotteries may differ with regards to how often one can play, how much money one can win and whether you must be resident to participate; some major lotteries include American Powerball and Australia’s Set for Life among others.

Some lottery critics have accused lottery operatorss of manipulating winning numbers, for instance when players reported the number 67 was won three times consecutively, which can be seen as bad luck in Laos. A Laos-based lottery watcher informed RFA that numbers weren’t fixed but were determined by many other factors like weight of lottery balls that can influence drawing outcomes.

Government attempts to regulate gambling industry have seen crackdown on illegal lotteries. Finance Minister Bounchom Ubonpaseuth recently stated in a meeting that these operations lure people into habitual betting and need to be dealt with accordingly. To better address the situation, Bounchom ordered his ministry work with authorities responsible for police to manage it more effectively while calling for state lotteries to reduce draws from two per week to just one as well as cancel scratchcard lottery operations altogether.

Xia Rattanakone of Seattle, Washington recently won $55 Million in the Oct 14 Powerball draw and plans to donate some of it back to her birth family by giving away part of it as she travels home searching for relatives. She says she plans to take time off work as an aid at one of Seattle’s public schools so she can search out relatives.

The country has experienced issues with its lottery business in the form of fraud allegations in recent years. One former official from a state lottery company was sentenced to jail for embezzlement in 2012. As a result, sales dropped and money earned decreased significantly; yet lottery sales remain an integral part of national economy and public support has remained strong; money generated has helped build schools, facilities, and provided assistance to some of the poorest members of society.
