This talk will explore the political, economic and moral histories of Laos Lottery since 1975. Charles Zuckerman, a linguistic anthropologist will trace how it became state enterprise; how its economic benefits have been rationalized into socialist goals; what playing was like during his ethnographic research in Luang Prabang from 2013-2016; as well as what playing and selecting numbers means on the ground.
