Laos Lotto App Could Be Rigged

Laos has long been a cash-strapped communist nation. Yet officials appear to be manipulating winning numbers with lottery games, according to sources in Southeast Asian nation Laos. As reported by RFA’s Lao Service, winning numbers often appear on purchased tickets as though suddenly vanished; winning numbers such as 509 have often been perceived by locals as unlucky by them; 509 appeared only as 5 on many tickets bought for Oct 14 drawing, even after people tried hard to pick it. Meanwhile 67 is considered unlucky as it symbolizes turtle–an ancient symbol of evilness for many Lao peoples.

Officials deny these accusations, stating they are taking measures to stop such activities. Vilasack Phommaluck, an official on a committee overseeing the lottery, suggested limiting drawings to once every week with live results broadcast, to help deter such shenanigans. He further mentioned other changes being considered by ministry.

At the beginning of this year, a woman from Vientiane won more than 1.2 billion kip from buying a six-digit ticket on the app Insee – one of the highest prize totals ever seen in Lao lottery history!
