The lottery system in the communist country of Laos is being rigged by government officials, according to sources in Vientiane. The national lottery, held three times each week, often shows numbers that disappear from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. In one instance, the number 134 disappeared from the lottery ticket sales system on Oct. 14 but was later restored an hour before the lottery drawing.
This is the same for numbers that appear and then disappear in a few seconds before the winning numbers are announced, one source told RFA’s Lao Service. The government has responded to the growing concerns by sending a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the legal state lottery, to work with the Ministry of Public Security to improve its management and handling of lottery winnings. The directive calls for reducing the frequency of drawings and better managing the lottery system.
