Lottery for Arts is a fundraising event designed to provide art enthusiasts with the opportunity to acquire original works of fine art by professional and emerging artists. Proceeds benefit education and outreach programs at Blue Line Arts. Lottery tickets can be purchased online, in person or over the phone. Tickets must be picked up prior to the live auction, and can be used for one artwork. Please note that only the actual number drawn will be considered to be a winning ticket. The Maryland Lottery encourages responsible play.
In the United States, state governments operate the majority of lottery games. They also manage the prizes and distribute proceeds to local schools, charities and community organizations. Some states are more restrictive than others when it comes to regulating the industry, but most do not prohibit people from buying lottery tickets. Lottery games have become more popular with the advent of the Internet, where players can purchase a ticket from any location in the world. Several private companies offer services that enable players to buy tickets on the Internet, but most of these sites are not licensed by state governments and are illegal in many jurisdictions.
Despite the risks, some people continue to participate in lottery games. In some cases, the prizes are small and do not cover the cost of entry fees. Canada, for instance, has four nationwide lotteries: the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Loto-Quebec (Quebec) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). Each lottery is governed by a provincial or territorial authority that is responsible for the licensing, operations and distribution of the games.

For Huong, a single mother of two in Saigon, lottery sales are her only source of income. She and her partner Manh start their day at 5 am with a breakfast of rice and vegetable soup, then hit the streets for a 16-hour shift. On good days, they sell up to 250 tickets, which earns them 230 000 VND (about 10 US-dollars). For poor Vietnamese, selling tickets is more practical than begging because it does not require face-to-face interaction and can be done at any time of the day or night. However, even on good days, the income is barely enough to support them.
