Lottery online is an industry that sells lottery-style games on the Internet. These games can be played on a desktop computer, mobile phone or tablet. They are generally free to play but may offer premiums or additional services such as subscriptions or advertising. Some of these sites are run by state-licensed gambling operators. Others are operated by private companies such as GTech Corporation, a lottery software company. Some online lottery websites also operate live draws where participants can watch the results as they happen.

The largest lottery is the Spanish Christmas Lottery, operated by Loterias y Apuestas del Estado. The prize pool for this lottery is the biggest in Europe. Other large lotteries include the National Lottery in the United Kingdom, operated by Camelot Group and EuroMillions in France, Germany and the UK. In Australia, state government-owned and operated lotteries exist along with privately run lottery companies such as Netlotto Pty Ltd and Jumbo Interactive. The Australian Health Lottery was launched in 2011.

In the United States, lottery sales are controlled by state and territorial governments. Lottery profits are used to support public schools, education and other state programs. In addition, some states use a portion of their lottery proceeds to fund public casinos.

While gambling is illegal in Laos, there are three casinos operating in special economic zones that have been leased out by the government. These casinos provide popular gambling games like roulette, poker and blackjack. They are not open to residents of Laos but attract a significant number of foreign visitors each year.

Some state-run lotteries are regulated by the Gaming Control Board. However, many are not. Some have strict laws that prohibit minors from playing, while others do not. In addition, some states require that winners be at least 18 years old. In these cases, winnings are paid in cash, while other prizes are awarded in the form of goods or services.

In Canada, the national lottery is governed by interprovincial agreement between five regional lottery commissions owned by their provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Yukon). Other lotteries are run at the local level or by independent organizations. Some of these are based on the old traditional lottery, while others have more modern games such as instant tickets and video lottery terminals. In the latter case, the winning numbers are generated by random selection of a predetermined sequence of symbols.
