In addition to the government-owned Lottery Office, Laos has a number of private lottery companies that sell tickets and provide lottery information over the telephone and through short messaging services.
A government directive sent to the Lottery Office ordered it to work with the Ministry of Finance to better manage the problem, the sources said. Drawings of the state lottery will be reduced from two to one a week and winners must be handled in a more transparent manner, the directive said. It also instructed officials to close down informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through the short-messaging service.
