The company also sells scratch-off tickets for many states, but does not operate its own retail stores or sell them in-person. The largest retail chain that sells lottery tickets in the United States is Walgreens, which operates approximately 5,500 stores.
Canada currently has four nationwide lotteries, which are administered by provincial/territorial government-owned organizations: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut). All of them are legal under Canadian law, which was amended in 1967 to allow lottery games.
In the United States, lottery winnings are taxed according to state laws. Some states, such as Oregon, permit winners to remain anonymous. In other states, including California and Florida, winners must choose whether to receive the prize in a lump sum or as an annuity paid over 30 years. This choice has implications for the winner’s total tax liability. In Oregon, lottery winners can avoid paying federal taxes by taking the lump-sum option.
