Lottery Online is an Internet-based lottery which operates in the country of Liechtenstein. It is owned by a nonprofit foundation, the International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation (ILLF), which is a member of the Global Lottery Association and the European Gaming Council. The ILLF has pioneered online gambling, processing the first online lottery transaction and launching the first instant scratch-card games on the Web. It also supports charitable projects and organizations domestically and internationally.

NBC Asian America reports on a lottery winner in Oregon who has won a prize worth $1.3 billion. The jackpot, which is the fourth largest in U.S. history, will be paid in 29 annual installments beginning in 2023. The winning ticket was purchased at a Plaid Pantry convenience store in Portland. The top prize is subject to federal and state taxes. The winner has a year to claim the money, and under Oregon law, winners cannot remain anonymous.

In the US, state governments control national lotteries, while the majority of the country’s private lotteries are run by individual companies. Many of these privately run lotteries are based on the same principles as state-run lotteries, including a draw of numbers and a prize amount. The difference is that a private company does not have to comply with the same regulations as a government-run lottery.

In Canada, there are four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and the Daily Grand. In addition, the province of Quebec operates a provincial lottery, and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is the interprovincial operator. Prior to 1967, buying a lottery ticket was illegal in Canada, but that changed when the Liberal government introduced a special bill called an Omnibus Bill designed to update several obsolete laws. The bill was sponsored by Pierre Trudeau, and it included a new section that legalized the existence of lotteries.

While public lotteries are still largely banned in communist Laos, informal football and lottery chances sold by mobile phone companies are commonplace. Officials say they are working to crack down on these activities. A directive sent to the Ministry of Finance in late August ordered the official state lottery to reduce the number of drawings and ensure that winnings are distributed more transparently. It also calls for a greater level of oversight of the lottery’s operations.

A government source speaking on condition of anonymity told RFA that the Lao business interests that run the lottery have close ties to the ruling elite. These businesses pay the government an annual fee to run the lottery, but no one inspects their work and the public is not informed how much they are paying for their services, the official said.
