Lottery games are popular with many people worldwide. They are regulated by laws in different countries, with some using video lottery terminals (which resemble slot machines in all but name). The largest public lotteries are run by state governments, while private companies run national or regional ones. Several lotteries offer instant tickets, which have become a major source of revenue in some jurisdictions. Others allow players to choose numbers online or via a computer.

The world’s most popular lottery is the Powerball, a multistate game run in the United States. Its prize pool averages more than US$2.4 billion annually, and its top prize/jackpot is not split by the winning ticket-holders. Other large lotteries include the EuroMillions, a pan-European game run by the Camelot Group, and the annual Spanish Christmas lottery.

In Canada, which has four nationwide lotteries, the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation operates Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. The individual provincial/territorial lottery commissions are Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario).

Lottery online is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, where lottery games are legal. Players can choose their numbers and purchase tickets online, often at a discount from the official lottery website. Lottery online also allows players to view the results of past draws and play games like keno.

In New Zealand, lottery profits are distributed by the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board to charitable and community organizations. Among those beneficiaries are Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Creative New Zealand, and the New Zealand Film Commission.

Lao deputy finance minister and state lottery supervisor Sila Viengkeo has vowed to crack down on illegal online lottery activities, but he said the allegations that the government’s state lottery system lacks transparency are unfounded. Viengkeo spoke to RFA’s Ounkeo Souksavanh and Bounchanh Mouangkham on Aug. 17, the day that a directive was issued ordering lottery dealers to register and pay taxes. Those violating the new directive will be subject to fines or even jail time, he said. He added that he was aware of the growing popularity of lottery online, but he hoped the state would not erode its reputation with the public. He urged state lottery retailers to make their business practices transparent and to cooperate with police in enforcing the rules.
