Laos Lottery
The national lottery enterprise in the communist country of Laos is being manipulated by private business interests with connections to the nation’s ruling elite, according to sources in the capital city. Officials who control the lottery are rigging the system by manipulating winning numbers, the sources said.
They added that the numbers chosen for the Oct. 14 drawing – 509 – appeared only as a 5 on the purchased tickets, while other numbers such as 662 disappeared from the list of winners. The winning number was a popular choice because it is associated with the buffalo, which is considered to be a symbol of good luck, the source told RFA’s Lao Service.
A 52-year-old man from Oregon’s suburb of Milwaukie became the first winner of the $90 million Powerball jackpot after buying a ticket at a convenience store in Portland in early April. He has yet to come forward to claim his prize, but he is expected to do so soon. He has shared his thoughts on his experience in a video posted on the Oregon Lottery’s YouTube channel. He also praised the store where he bought his ticket.
