In Laos, the state lottery is run by a private business consortium that includes members of the country’s ruling elite. In response, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive on Aug. 17 asking the ministry to work with other ministries to improve management of the lottery. Among other things, it asked the ministry to reduce drawing frequency from two to one per week and handle winnings more transparently. It also ordered the ministry to close down informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging services.
Winning tickets with a value up to and including $600 can be redeemed at any Expanded Cashing Authority Program retailer. To claim a prize of more than $600, you must present a valid photo ID and proof of your social security number or federal tax identification number, which must match the name registered on your lottery ticket. Winnings over $600 are paid by check from Maryland Lottery headquarters. Prizes of more than $25,000 are paid by mail from the lottery’s headquarters after a 30-business-day claim period.
