Lottery Online

During the last decade lottery games have evolved into digital platforms, enabling players to play in global lotteries from the comfort of their homes. The prize structure of lotteries encourages participation and attracts a broad audience of hopeful individuals who seek their fortunes through this form of legal gambling. Online lottery gaming companies, such as GTech Corporation based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island, administer 70% of worldwide online and instant lottery business, according to the company’s website.

In some countries, governments have established national lotteries to raise funds for government projects and to promote social causes. Private businesses also operate lotteries to promote their products. The National Lottery in New Zealand, for example, provides a significant portion of its revenues to community organizations and charities. It is the world’s sixth-largest lottery.

Lottery prizes are structured to reward players who match all or most of the winning numbers in a drawing, with higher prize amounts for matching more of the winning numbers. In addition to the jackpot, there are other prizes including cash, free tickets, and goods. Prize amounts for winning numbers are calculated by multiplying the bet amount by a predetermined multiplier.

Before 1967, purchasing a lottery ticket was illegal in Canada. That year the federal Liberal government introduced a special law (an Omnibus Bill) that was meant to bring up-to-date many obsolete laws. The bill included an amendment concerning lotteries.

Today, the Canadian government operates four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. Each of the provincial/territorial governments also operates its own lottery commission. These are: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut).

In the communist nation of Laos, government officials have been accused of rigging the national lottery to avoid large pay-outs. For example, in a recent drawing, the number 09 appeared only as a 5 on tickets purchased throughout the day of the drawing. This number was associated with the symbol of the buffalo, which is considered lucky in Laos, a source told RFA’s Lao Service.

The majority of the Laos lottery companies with a stake in the national lottery’s work are run by family members of the ruling elite, the source said. He added that he hopes the government will take back control of the lottery, saying that it should be 100 percent managed by the state.
