Officials in the communist country of Laos have been accused of rigging the national lottery to avoid paying large jackpot winners. Sources in the capital city of Vientiane tell RFA that drawings for the national lottery have a high incidence of missing or vanishing numbers. For example, the winning number for the drawing held on Oct. 14 this year was 509, but the number mysteriously disappeared from tickets sold throughout the day of the draw.

Moreover, the people with business interests in the lottery are linked to the ruling elite of Laos. “The majority of the companies responsible for the national lottery are owned by individuals with connections to top government officials,” a Lao caller told RFA’s Lao Service. “The public should demand that the government resume control of the lottery, because it should be 100 percent managed by them,” he said. “It’s not a good thing to have private business interests running it.”
