In Laos, meanwhile, private business interests hold a significant stake in the country’s national lottery, RFA’s Ounkeo Souksavanh reported. The companies responsible for the lottery’s work include those owned by persons with close ties to the ruling elite, he said. The public is not told how much these businesses pay to the government for the annual cost of the lottery concession, and the results are not publicly inspected, he added. The government should resume control of the lottery, he said. “If the lottery is not supervised by the government, it can’t be trusted,” he told RFA.
