In this talk, Dr Charles Zuckerman will explore the political and moral history of lotteries since 1975, and how they might shed light on state enterprises in Laos generally. He will also look at the mechanics of the lottery and what it means for people on the ground. This will be based on his ethnographic research in Luang Prabang between 2013 and 2016. He will focus on the ways that people have rationalized the lottery as an activity that is coherent with socialist goals. He will then discuss the various nuances of playing, choosing and winning the lottery in Laos.
