In the United States, lottery is regulated at the state level. Each jurisdiction has its own lottery commission, which oversees the distribution of proceeds from the sale of tickets and other products such as instant tickets. Some states have also regulated keno and video lottery terminals, which are similar to slot machines. The majority of US lottery revenue comes from tickets sold in physical stores, while the remaining comes from sales of lottery-style games on-line and through private operators.

Lotteries are popular worldwide and are a form of gambling. They have a long history, going back to antiquity. The first modern lotteries appeared in Europe in the 17th century and were developed as a way to raise funds for public projects. In some countries, they are a significant source of tax revenue. In others, they are used to fund social programs. The lottery industry is highly competitive, with many companies offering instant and mobile games to attract customers.

Buying a lottery ticket in Canada was illegal until 1967, when the Liberal government introduced an Omnibus Bill to bring up-to-date a number of obsolete laws. The bill was sponsored by Pierre Trudeau, then minister of justice. The new law permitted the provincial governments to legalise the purchase of a lottery ticket.

Today, there are four nationwide lotteries in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand and Millionaire Life. The games are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by their respective provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories) and British Columbia Lottery and Gaming Corporation (British Columbia). All of these organizations receive their funding from the provincial/territorial governments.
