For example, the winning number 509 in the Oct. 14 lottery drawing appeared only as 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, a local resident told RFA’s Lao Service.
In response to these complaints, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith’s office sent a directive on Aug. 17 requiring the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the legal state lottery, to work with the Ministry of Public Security to better manage the problem. It also ordered that the number of lottery drawings be reduced from two to one a week and that winnings be handled more transparently.
