One example is the US lottery software company GTech Corporation, which administers 70% of global online lottery sales. Lotteries are also becoming more widespread, with many states and territories now allowing their citizens to play online games like lottery-style games for money.
Despite its legality, the lottery is controversial in some countries, particularly when it is used to fund public projects. In some cases, public opinion has swayed policy makers to restrict the lottery or its use for particular purposes. In others, however, public officials have found the lottery to be a good way to help the economy.

Some countries have a national lottery while others have multi-national lotteries. For example, the United Kingdom has its own national lottery called the National Lottery. The UK is also part of the EuroMillions, a pan-European lottery run by Camelot Group. In addition, there are several private lotteries such as The Health Lottery, operated by Demiroren Holding.
In Canada, there are four national lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. All four are operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five provincial/territorial lottery commissions owned by their respective governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon).
The communist nation of Laos is another country where the government runs its own state-run lottery. But in the past, lottery officials have been accused of rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs. In this talk, Charles Zuckerman will trace the political, economic and moral history of the lottery in Laos since its launch in 1975, and explore how the lottery has been rationalized as an economic activity coherent with socialist goals. He will also discuss what he learned about the lottery while doing ethnographic research in Luang Prabang from 2013-2016. He will also address how the lottery may shed light on larger issues about state enterprises and Laos in general.
