Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith’s office sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery, requesting that it work with other ministries to improve transparency and reduce fraud. Drawings from the state lottery must be reduced from two to one per week and winnings will be handled more transparently, the directive said. In addition, informal football lottery games and lottery chances bought via short messaging services must be closed down.
New Zealand’s national lottery is run by an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand, which distributes profits to a variety of charities and community organizations.
