Lottery Online

Lottery games are a popular source of entertainment around the world. Some are run by governments or state-owned corporations, while others are private. The latter are often called internet-based lottery systems and charge a small fee for each ticket purchased. Many also feature online games and other interactive features such as keno, which is similar to bingo. Some of these online games are even available for free, with the player winning a prize for simply seeing an advertisement or other type of promotion.

In the United States, lottery games are operated by several state-licensed companies. These include GTech Corporation, based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. It administers about 70% of worldwide online and instant lottery sales. In addition, some private companies offer a variety of services related to lottery games. These range from allowing customers to purchase tickets through a website to assisting them in forming their own lotteries.

The government of the Laos has recently taken steps to deal with illegal lotteries and other forms of gambling, which have become a problem in the communist nation. On Aug. 17, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith sent a directive requesting that the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the legal state lottery, work with the Ministry of Public Security to better manage the problem. Drawings from the state lottery must now be reduced to one a week and winnings handled in a more transparent manner, the directive says. In addition, informal football lotteries and lottery chances sold through short messaging services will be closed down.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Finance told RFA’s Lao Service that private business interests should not be responsible for the national lottery. He said that these businesses have connections to the ruling elite and that the public is not being informed of how much they pay to the state for their monopoly on the lottery’s work. In the past, he added, the companies that have managed the lottery’s work have manipulated the results in order to avoid large pay-outs.

In Canada, prior to 1967 buying a lottery ticket was illegal. However, in that year the federal Liberal government passed a special law intended to bring up-to-date a number of obsolete laws. The new law permitted a provincial government to legally operate a lottery system. The Canadian government now operates four nationwide lotteries: the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario) and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories). The government also supports charitable projects internationally through the International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation.
