Lottery Online

Lottery Online is a form of gambling in which players buy chances to win prizes. These prizes are often cash, goods, or services. Lottery winnings are usually tax free in most countries. Several Internet companies offer lottery games. Some are private and others operate as state-approved organizations. The International Lottery in Liechtenstein Foundation (ILLF) pioneered Internet gaming, launching the first online lottery and processing the first online gaming transaction in 1995. ILLF also supports charitable projects and organizations domestically and internationally.

The legal status of gambling in Laos is complicated. Although gambling is illegal, it is tolerated in Special Economic Zones and the country’s government does not fully control the national lottery. Many business interests have a stake in the operation of the lottery and its profits. These include families of national leaders and officials, sources tell RFA’s Lao Service. Nevertheless, the office of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has sent a directive to the Ministry of Finance asking it to better manage the lottery. It has instructed the ministry to reduce the number of drawings from two to one a week and handle winnings more transparently. In addition, informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased via short messaging service will be closed down.

Canada used to have a single nationwide lottery, but in 1967 the federal Liberal government passed an Omnibus Bill that included a new law that made playing the Irish sweepstakes illegal. Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau responded with a “voluntary tax” for which players paid a $2.00 fee to be eligible for a draw in which they could win silver bars instead of money. The federal government argued that the “tax” violated the Omnibus Bill, but the Quebec Appeal Court ruled against them in September 1968.

The lottery in Vietnam is a popular source of income for poor citizens. Due to the fact that Vietnam’s social security systems are not yet capable of handling the growing population of needy people, many of them choose selling lottery tickets over the more socially detested act of begging on the streets. On a lucky day, lottery ticket sellers can earn up to 230 000 VN-Dong (10 US-Dollars) – enough for them and their family to survive. One such seller is Huong, a pregnant single mother from Saigon. Her story is told in the documentary, The Lottery Girl. The movie is currently in the process of being screened at international film festivals.
