Lottery Online
The Internet has revolutionized the lottery business, opening it up to anyone with a computer. Today, lottery-style games can be played on a variety of websites, with many offering instant-win prizes. Those sites often charge a premium on base lottery prices. In some cases, the premium is based on the number of advertisements that appear on a page. Some are operated by major software vendors, such as GTech Corporation, based in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. The company claims to administer 70% of worldwide online and instant-win lottery business.
In the United States, state-licensed lotteries sell tickets to play a variety of games. These include scratch-offs, draw games, and keno. Some are available in a physical format, while others are online-only. In addition to traditional state-licensed lotteries, private companies operate many unauthorized online lotteries. These illegal lotteries are called ‘black-market lotteries’ and have been a source of controversy.
Some countries have legalized state-run lotteries and other forms of gambling, such as the national lottery in Australia. This lottery is a popular source of funding for public services, such as education, health, and welfare. It is a good alternative to traditional taxation, which can be burdensome on those who are less fortunate.
However, the state-run lottery is not without its problems. A recent directive from the office of Lao prime minister Thongloun Sisoulith ordered the Ministry of Finance, which oversees the country’s legal state lottery, to work with police to improve transparency in the operation of the lottery system. The directive stated that drawing sessions will be reduced from two to one per week and that winnings will be handled in a more transparent manner. It also stated that informal football lotteries and lottery chances purchased by short messaging service would be shut down.
For many poor people in Vietnam, selling lottery tickets is the only way to make a living. Huong, a single mother from Saigon, sells her tickets to support herself and her unborn child. On a good day, she can make up to 230 000 VN-Dong (about 10 US-Dollars) in profit, which is enough to survive. But her days are long and tiresome, starting at 5 am with a quick breakfast of rice and vegetable soup before striving around the streets of Saigon for 16 hours.
The ILLF pioneered Internet gaming, launching the web’s first lottery website, PLUS Lotto, in 1995 and processing the first online gambling transaction. The ILLF has since grown to become the world’s largest Internet lottery operator with over a million active players worldwide. It also supports charitable projects and organizations domestically and internationally. Unlike other online lottery operators, ILLF does not sell tickets to win the lottery or collect commissions on its sales. The ILLF is a publicly-registered, charitable foundation and its profits are not taxed in Liechtenstein. However, the government of Liechtenstein is working to limit this practice.
