Lottery online is a type of gambling wherein players place bets on a series of numbers to win a prize. The prizes can range from a modest cash prize to an expensive sports car or even a home. In Laos, the state-run lottery system is rigged by business interests with connections to the ruling elite, sources say. For example, the winning number for the national lottery drawing on Oct. 14 this year was 509, but that number vanished from purchased tickets. A source told RFA’s Lao Service that the number was chosen because it is associated with buffalo, a symbol of wealth in Lao culture.

But the state’s deputy finance minister and lottery supervisor, Sila Viengkeo, vehemently denied the allegations, saying that the company that runs the state-run lottery is responsible for its work. He added that accusations of rigging the drawing results are unfounded.

For many poor Vietnamese people, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income. They choose to do it over the socially detested act of begging. On good days, Huong, a single mother from Saigon, can sell up to 250 lottery tickets for a daily profit of about 11 US-Dollars. Her partner Manh, who supports his family of three with the earnings from the lottery, tries to be as cheerful as possible during their 16-hour shift. They start their day at 5 am with a small breakfast of rice and vegetable soup. Depending on how well they sell, they may go home early or late.
