Buying a lottery ticket in Canada used to be illegal until 1967, when the federal Liberal government introduced a special law to bring up-to-date a number of obsolete statutes. The law included an amendment permitting a provincial government to operate a lottery system.
Today, most Canadian lotteries are administered by the interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of the five regional lotteries run by their respective provinces and territories. These are Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Nunavut) and British Columbia Lottery Corporation (British Columbia). All of these lotteries offer a variety of games, including the popular Lotto 6/49 and the weekly Lotto Max. They also offer a number of smaller games, such as Daily Grand and Millionaire Life.
