In the wake of that, Montreal Mayor Jean Drapeau, trying to recover money for the World’s Fair and a new subway system, announced a “voluntary tax.” This was essentially a lottery, but the prize (a silver bar) was not monetary and contestants were required to answer questions about the city in order to participate.
Today, Canada has four nationwide lotteries: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. These are operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, which is composed of five regional lottery corporations: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut). Players can also purchase tickets online. The winner of a Lottery artwork must be present to claim it.
