In Canada, buying a lottery ticket was illegal until 1967, when the federal Liberal government passed an Omnibus Bill to update a number of obsolete laws. The legislation included a clause allowing a province to establish a provincial lottery system. Quebec launched its first lottery in 1968, and sales quickly grew to more than $800 000 per month.

Lotteries have become a popular source of income for many countries, and some are a major source of revenue for public services such as education systems. However, the legality of these lotteries varies greatly among jurisdictions. Some countries prohibit them, while others endorse them or regulate them closely.
