Lotteries are public games in which numbers are drawn at random to determine winners of prizes. They are popular in many countries and are often used to raise funds for a variety of projects and public services. They are generally regulated by government agencies, although private companies may operate them as well. In the US, large portions of state lottery proceeds are used to fund public education systems.

There are currently four nationwide lotteries in Canada: Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max (which replaced the former Lotto Super 7 in September 2009), Daily Grand, and Millionaire Life. These are administered by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation, a consortium of five regional lottery commissions owned by the provincial/territorial governments: Atlantic Lottery Corporation (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (Ontario), Loto-Quebec (Quebec), and Western Canada Lottery Corporation (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut).

In New Zealand, the national lottery is controlled by an autonomous Crown entity, Lotto New Zealand. Profits are distributed through the Lottery Grants Board directly to community organizations and charities. Sport and recreation, the arts, and community organizations are a few of the major beneficiaries of this funding. Lottery winnings are not taxed in New Zealand.

Throughout the year, lottery winners are announced on television and in print. The winner must claim the prize within 180 days of the drawing date. The list of winners is also available on the Lottery’s website. In addition, winning numbers are announced on the Internet and through social media channels.

In Vietnam, where the poverty rate is high, selling lottery tickets is a good way to earn money. The profits can be significant and are a welcome alternative to the socially detested act of begging. On good days, a single mother like Huong can sell 250 lottery tickets per day and make a profit of about 10 US-Dollars. The rest of the day she spends with her husband and their soon-to-be born baby, cuddling and petting her belly.
