Laos Lottery Officials Rigging System
Sources in Laos say that officials at the country’s national lottery are rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs. They manipulate the results by changing winning numbers to discourage the purchase of tickets with particular numbers, sources told RFA’s Lao Service. For example, the number 509 was rigged to appear as five on tickets sold throughout the day of a recent lottery drawing. This was done to prevent people from trying to buy tickets with the number, which is associated with buffaloes in Laos and seen as a symbol of good luck.
A Lao woman who won a lottery prize last year has said she will use her money to buy a house, and to travel. Dokkeo, who has two children, said she would also devote some of her money to helping out family and friends. She added that since the news of her victory spread, she has been inundated with calls, messages, and text from well-wishers. However, she said her top priority is her family. She wants to spend some of her prize money on a vacation in South Korea or Japan.
