In the communist nation of Laos, lottery officials are suspected of rigging the system to avoid large pay-outs. Sources tell RFA that winners have been forced to give up their prizes because the numbers they picked are illegible or simply disappear from purchased tickets during the drawings. For example, the winning number of the Oct. 14 drawing, which was 134, disappeared from tickets sold throughout the day and reappeared as 5 just an hour before the draw. The alleged manipulations have drawn the attention of the government, which has ordered the ministry to better monitor the situation.
