Officials in the communist-run country of Laos are accused of rigging the national lottery to avoid large pay-outs to winning players, sources in the Southeast Asian nation tell RFA’s Lao Service. Drawings often show numbers that have vanished from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be selected, the sources say. For example, on Oct. 14 this year, the winning number of 509 disappeared from tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing after a huge rush by buyers to obtain tickets with the number. The number reappeared an hour before the scheduled drawing. Winning tickets can be redeemed at all Maryland Lottery retailers, unless directed to claim them at Lottery headquarters. Lottery winners must present valid photo ID and a social security or federal tax identification number to claim prizes of $600 or more.
