Laos’s population is predominantly Buddhist, with 66% belonging to the Theravada school of Buddhism and 1% being either Christian or Muslim. The remaining 31% belong to other religions or are atheists. Nonetheless, many people still play the lottery for its prizes and to relieve stress. Laos’s annual lottery revenues are estimated to be about $1.4 billion. This is a small percentage of the country’s GDP, which is around $18 billion. Nevertheless, the lottery is popular with both young and old and provides an important source of revenue for the government. However, some critics accuse the government of corruption and misuse of funds. The resulting controversy has led to a drop in sales and complaints from lottery players.
