Drawings in the country’s national lottery, which take place three times each week, often show numbers that vanish from purchased tickets or are deemed unlucky and unlikely to be chosen. For example, the number 509 in this year’s October 14 drawing appeared only as a 5 on tickets sold throughout the day of the drawing, a resident of the capital Vientiane told RFA’s Lao Service.
The Lottery Commission of Laos, which oversees the lottery, did not respond to a request for comment. The government has said it will work to increase transparency and manage the lottery in a more responsible manner. In a recent speech, the prime minister said private business interests should not be in charge of running the lottery. He added that the government will reduce drawings to one a week and stop selling tickets through short messaging services.
For many Vietnamese citizens, selling lottery tickets is their only source of income.
